Max P. Jansen

My research is situated at the intersection of political sociology, educational research, social stratification, and peace and conflict studies.

Drawing on large-scale primary data collected in Germany, I examine how social inequalities shape stratified experiences of recognition, belonging, and self-understanding. My work seeks to advance theoretical clarity and empirical depth in the study of symbolic exclusion and unequal opportunities for social participation.

The title of my PhD project is "it's me, not them...!?" Exploring Issues of Identity Related to the Impostor Phenomenon in Light of the Reconfiguration of Social Structures. A summary was published in Issue 53 of The European Sociologist: Between Social Mobility and Internalized Self-Doubt - Rethinking the Impostor Phenomenon Through a Lens of Social Theory. A short version in German is available on the website of the "Dialectics of Participation" doctoral program at the Institute for Social Research: "it's me, not them..!?"

Building on this, my postdoctoral project extends this line of inquiry by investigating how status-related identity conflicts unfold over time and across diverse international contexts. The project aims to more fully integrate longitudinal and intersectional perspectives into the analysis of inequality, recognition, and participation.

I am committed to open and accessible science. Wherever possible, my research is published as open-access or made available as preprints. For full texts or PDFs, please see the list below.
